Transcranial magnetic stimulation demonstrated abnormal GABA-ergic and glutamatergic regulation of the motor cortex excitability in individuals with post-COVID syndrome and cognitive deficits

Patients diagnosed with long COVID syndrome and cognitive deterioration had significantly reduced long-interval intracortical inhibition that depends on slow inhibitory post-synaptic potentials mediated through GABA receptors and an abnormal pattern of intracortical facilitation, which is associated with glutamatergic excitatory signaling.

Individuals with post-COVID neuropsychiatric symptoms have abnormal brain activation during working memory tasks with lower activation of regions in the left hemisphere and  higher activation of regions in the right hemisphere

Individuals with post-COVID neuropsychiatric symptoms have abnormal brain activation during working memory tasks with lower activation of regions in the left hemisphere and  higher activation of regions in the right hemisphere

This is the first task-activated BOLD-fMRI study conducted in individuals diagnosed with post-COVID neuropsychiatric symptoms. The results discovered a different brain activity and reorganized working memory network in post-COVID participants compared to healthy controls who had no history of COVID-19 and tested negative for SARS-CoV-2.
